The Noisy Cricket is a little 1/2 Watt guitar amplifier that fits into a standard Hammond-like enclosure (such as the one I used here: http://diystrat.blogspot.com/2013/04/building-modified-ea-tremolo-pedal-on.html ). It uses a MPF102 or a 2N5951 transistor as a preamp channel and an LM386 as the power amp.

It is a simple amplifier running off of a 9V supply (wall wart or battery) and consisting of a handful of components around a LM386 audio amplifier chip.

In some environments with noisy power or certain types of lighting, the buzz can be quite bad. The only way to remove this type of noise would be to change the pickups to a different kind, such as humbuckers. Some companies also make single-coil pickups that are noiseless. They can be a great upgrade.

The total bill for parts to make two came to +/- $60. I'm quite sure that you can go a LOT cheaper than this with frugal & dedicated internet searching. Still, $30 each in parts doesn't seem unreasonable. Looking at the spec sheet, it says the speakers need to be 4-16 ohms.
